1. [5 minutes] Introduction: Open Discussion
Have teachers discuss the following question: “How do you meet the needs of all your learners during math instruction?”*
Encourage teachers to discuss the following:
- instructional practices used in the classroom
- specific activities they incorporate into their lessons
- assessments used to guide instruction
- small group/whole group instruction
- re-teaching strategies
2. [50 minutes] Present “What is Math Workshop” Part 1 PowerPoint Presentation
- Time allows for discussion, questions, and/or concerns brought up by staff members. (See author's notes for discussion prompts)
3. [20 minutes] Video on 6th Grade Mathematics - Workshop Best Model Practices.
- Watch Video
Discuss and share thoughts, questions, new ideas, and concerns with whole group.
Ask the following questions to spark conversation:*
4. [30 minutes] Present “How to Prepare for Math Workshop” Part 2 PowerPoint Presentation
Ask the following questions to spark conversation:*
- "What did you think of this video?"
- "What did you learn from this video?"
- "What can you take away from Mr. Bradley’s approach to mathematics?"
4. [30 minutes] Present “How to Prepare for Math Workshop” Part 2 PowerPoint Presentation
- Time allows for discussion, questions, and/or concerns brought up by staff members. (See author's notes for discussion prompts)
- Sample Group/Rotation (Woityra, 2009)

5. [15 minutes] Think, Pair, Share
Have teachers work with a partner, nearby neighbor, or the closest person near them to talk about the Math Workshop Approach.
First THINK about the following questions:*
Next, Teachers PAIR up to discuss your answers to the questions, ideas, and thoughts.
Finally, have each pair SHARE a key idea with the whole group.
6. [30 minutes] Interactive Group Activity
Teachers will practice designing a math workshop lesson from their current grade level Mathematics curriculum.
Have teachers work with a partner, nearby neighbor, or the closest person near them to talk about the Math Workshop Approach.
First THINK about the following questions:*
- Can this approach work in your classroom?
- If so, explain how it would work.
- If not, explain how this approach would be challenging for your students and classroom?
- What assessments (already in place) can be used to guide grouping methods?
Next, Teachers PAIR up to discuss your answers to the questions, ideas, and thoughts.
Finally, have each pair SHARE a key idea with the whole group.
6. [30 minutes] Interactive Group Activity
Teachers will practice designing a math workshop lesson from their current grade level Mathematics curriculum.
- View and discuss Sample Math Workshop Lesson Plan (Woityra, 2009)
- Hand out Math Workshop Lesson Plan Template (Woityra, 2009) and review over the components that are needed for the activity.
- Instruct teachers to get out their Mathematics Teacher’s Manual and choose a lesson or multiple lesson depending on how many Math Teachers are within each group.
- Once math lesson is chosen, fill out lesson template using the information and resources provided by the curriculum. Feel free to use outside resources if necessary in order to reach all types of learners.

7. [15 minutes] Share Out Math Workshop Lesson Plans
8. [10 minutes] Wrap Up Discussion
Have teachers participate in a wrap up discussion of the following:*
Assessment of Teacher’s knowledge: POST IT Parking Lot Exit Slip - Write down one piece of knowledge and one question acquired from today’s Math Workshop PD on a STICKY NOTE and place sticky note in ONE square on the Parking Lot.
9. [5 minutes] Concluding Video
Kid President Video
- Nominate one “speaker” from each group to share or even display lesson plan with group. (ELMO is technology that can display document)
- Give teachers the opportunity to comment and/or question each others lesson plans being presented
8. [10 minutes] Wrap Up Discussion
Have teachers participate in a wrap up discussion of the following:*
- “How will this workshop approach benefit your students?”
- “What aspects will you incorporate into your math instruction?”
- “What would you modify to make this approach work for your students?”
- “What feelings do you have on this form of guided math instruction?”
- “What other questions or concerns do you have about this Math Workshop?”

Rationale
Session 6 of our professional development segments was created to educate teachers on another form of math instruction. In this session teachers will be provided with information on what Math Workshop is, how it differs from the traditional styles of teaching, how this approach can be adapted into many learning environments, how to prepare the classroom and students, and the benefits of the Math Workshop approach. Since classrooms are very diverse communities in terms of academic abilities, learning styles, interests, background knowledge, motivation, and social skills, the Math Workshop approach is a framework that offers many advantages compared to traditional teaching methods. Since many teachers in the upper grade levels work with diverse students, Math Workshop instruction provides teachers with an opportunity to meet the needs of all learning styles with a limited time frame. We will discuss the research behind Math Workshop and the strategies that can help teachers gradually incorporate this approach into their daily lessons. Teachers will learn that this approach will not only benefit students with disabilities, but all students in the classroom. This session will equip teachers with the knowledge and practice they need to better inform instruction in their own classrooms.
